Frankfurt is a fair metropolis, an attractiv center for business magnates and an important bank and stock exchange center.The landmark of the city is the "Römer" (Roman) with its Gothic stepped gables. In 1405 it was converted into the Town hall complex. The "Imperial Room" accomodated festive coronation banquets. Near by is the Gothic St.Bartholomew's Cathadral fom 852, which was selected as election church of the German Kaisers. The "Zeil" is an avenue with many shops and department stores, which attracts shoppers, onlookers and street musicians.The center between the Zeil and the Frankfurt railway station fom 1888 is dominated by the modern skyscrapers of the banks.
